DESCRIPTION OF POSITION Under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent, the Sr. Director of Special Needs supervises the district’s Special Needs and Services Programs, provides leadership in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the K-12 Special Education, Gifted and Talented Education, and Psychological Services staff, coordinates student psychological assessments and acts as a district liaison to county and state officials regarding compliance and legal procedures.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises the psychological services program.
Develops and implements procedures for the referral and placement of students in special programs consistent with existing laws and regulations.
Coordinates district resources with state and county funding programs.
Acts as the district liaison to the state and county offices for special education programs, and acts as district
representative to the Special education Local Plan Area (SELPA).
Develops and monitors annual budget for all assigned programs.
Directs the identification and pursuit of additional funding sources for at-risk students.
Provides leadership in the development of in-services and workshops for teachers and other staff in Special Needs and Services programs.
Provides leadership and expertise in assessing, identifying, formulating and implementing the district’s goals and objectives, in compliance with federal and state legal mandates, for its special needs and services programs.
Follows a planned professional growth program, participates actively in local, state and national professional
education, special education, and administrator associations, and studies local, state and national guidelines for
effective special education programs.
Fulfills other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Possession of a valid California clear Education Specialist Instruction Credential.
Possession of a valid California administrative credential
Master’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, preferably in special education, administration or a closely related field.
Three or more years of successful teaching experience.
Three or more years of successful experience in an administrative position, preferably including experience as a site principal.
Bilingual ability is desirable.
