The Morgridge College of Education (MCE) at the University of Denver (DU) invites applications for a tenure-track Department Chair position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning Sciences (TLS) beginning summer 2019 with a specialization in special education. DU is the oldest and largest independent university in the Rocky Mountain Region and is committed to building and sustaining a culturally diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
It is located in the city of Denver, which is quickly becoming one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the U.S. Census data show that Denver’s population includes 10.1% Black or African American, 30.5% Hispanic or Latino, 3.9% Asian American, and approximately 1.9% Native American residents. The State of Colorado is highly diverse with populations in urban, suburban, rural and remote areas.
MCE is located in Katherine A. Ruffatto Hall, a 65,000 square foot complex providing a flexible, innovative, and multidisciplinary learning environment. The facility allows for ongoing dialogue with community, national, and global partners through state-of-the-art technology as we enter a transformational era in education.
The Department of Teaching and Learning Science’s philosophy and mission are aligned with the MCE vision to train global leaders who employ innovative and effective approaches to advance learning, development, health and wellness throughout the lifespan, and who promote educational and social equity. Major program areas represented in the Department include, Teacher Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Early Childhood Special Education, Gifted Education, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education, and Child, Family and School Psychology with degrees offered at the Masters, Educational Specialist, Educational Doctorate, and Ph.D. level.
Our faculty are engaged in breakthrough and novel research, pedagogy, and practice rooted in deep reciprocal relationships with local, national, and international community partners. Faculty are strongly committed to teaching, mentoring and working in partnership with graduate students to connect theory, research and practice with meaningful social change that advances the public good. Our excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service is also reflected in the affiliated and collaborative work of the Marsico Institute of Early Learning, the Center for Rural School Health & Education and the Positive Early Learning Experiences Center.
We are looking for a Chair and colleague to continue the positive trajectory of the Department as we adopt an exciting new College strategic plan embedded in an intersystem philosophy and the promotion of interprofessional collaboration. This person will provide leadership while building bridges across disciplines that emphasize the collective strengths of the TLS faculty and students in support of our mission to serve the public good and promote inclusive excellence. We seek a candidate with a proven record of scholarship, teaching and leadership in supporting the diverse educational and mental health needs of families, educators, and special education populations within a rapidly changing global society.
This dedicated leadership and administrative position is a 9-month faculty appointment with a reduced teaching load of one course across three quarters (fall, winter, and spring), research support to ensure the successful candidate can continue to pursue their active research agenda, and service expectations appropriate to rank including but are not limited to academic advising, recruitment and admissions, and involvement in curricular alignment and accreditation activities.
As an administrator, the department chair serves a member of the MCE leadership team and as such serves as a leader across the entire College. The primary responsibilities include working with the Dean’s office to advocate for their department, to advance the mission of the College and to serve as an exemplary citizen of the University. Department Chairs are responsible for formulating and communicating departmental goals; overseeing hiring, retention and evaluation of faculty and departmental support staff; establishing departmental budget priorities, allocations, and work load assignments; and recommending leaves and special assignments with the Dean’s approval. Based on these responsibilities, the role includes a stipend for continued administrative work during the summer.
Earned doctorate in special education or a closely related area of expertise.
Candidates for Associate Professor will be mid-career scholars with a national reputation in teaching, research, and/or service.
Candidates for Professor will be career scholars with a national and international reputation in teaching, scholarly, research, and service.
Earned tenure at a prior institution and shows promise for meeting the MCE tenure criteria. If Associate or Professor rank is granted, consideration for tenure will also occur at the time of hire.
Experience working within an institution, school, or community educational setting serving students from birth to age 21.
Active research agenda, focused on applied research and dissemination of knowledge in a specified area of special education.
Established record of procuring external funding.
Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations.
Demonstrated collegial approach to leadership.
Administrative leadership experience in academic or professional organizations.
Research emphasis that addresses intersectionality of disability and race, class, and gender.
Experience working in diverse, underserved populations.
Established record of mentoring and providing guidance and leadership for junior faculty.
